We went
to Afghanistan shortly after the September 11 terrorist attacks. This
photo was taken in Kandahar, a former stronghold of the Taliban. A deeply
fundamentalist city, most of the women of Kandahar continued to wear the
traditional Burka, which covers them from head to toe, even after the
Taliban were removed from power. Women in Kandahar rarely venture outside
of the home alone and the man in the photograph was obviously their chaperone
for the day, he is probably a husband or brother of one of the women. |
